Trine bridge team competes

On Feb. 2, the Thunder Aces, Trine University’s bridge team, competed in the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) Collegiate tournament.

Competing for Trine were Brooke Hardy, a senior chemical engineering major from Wauseon, Ohio; Heather Fritz, a junior design engineering technology major from Columbia City, Indiana; Lucas Jackson, a sophomore civil engineering major from Valparaiso, Indiana; Adam Dumas, a freshman chemical engineering major from Swanton, Ohio; and Keely Brooks, a freshman general engineering major from Van Buren, Ohio.

The tournament featured 30 teams playing six matches of eight boards (hands). Trine faced off against teams from Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Washington University in St. Louis, Georgia Tech, Carleton and Cal Tech.

“The match against Carleton was interesting,” said Chet Pinkham, Ph.D., bridge club advisor. “Of the eight boards played, six were equal. Lucas made one trick more in a four-spade contract for one point.  We bid and made five diamonds while Carleton bid three, no trump, and made five (no trump tricks count more), so Carleton got two points. The match ended 2-1. This is then converted to International Match Point scoring, so the final result was Carleton 11, Trine 9.”
