Trine University’s esports program has two Overwatch teams in the nation’s top ECAC division this spring.
Trine will be the only university with two teams in the ECAC’s Overwatch Titans division, which includes the nation’s top 16 teams. ECAC has 187 members nationwide.
“We’re proud to have built one of the nation’s top esports programs, thanks to the dedication of our players, the university’s investment in state-of-the-art facilities and the support we receive from administration,” said Jeremy Goossens, director of esports at Trine.
“We’re looking forward to an exciting season with two teams now competing at the top level.”
Blue and Gold
The university’s Overwatch Blue team already competed in the Titans division last fall, finishing fourth.
That team is made up of Elton Langley, a sophomore from Indianapolis majoring in computer science and information technology; Jonah Kyle, a junior from Valparaiso, Indiana, majoring in computer science and information technology; Logan Gault, a junior from Indianapolis majoring in computer engineering; Brockstan Tschannen, a junior from Angola, Indiana, majoring in extended reality; and Hudson Kelly, a junior from LaGrange, Indiana, majoring in computer science and information technology.
The team began the spring season by defeating the University of Buffalo 3-1.
Trine’s Overwatch Gold team played in Division A, the second-highest division, last semester, where they qualified for the playoffs. That team also won the Block House Esports League MIAA.
The team moved up to the Titans division this semester due to player improvement and adding a new roster member.
Overwatch Gold is made up of Sayler Wotta, a design engineering technology major from Bronson, Michigan; Sam Mohring, a chemical engineering major from Delta, Ohio; Dolan Bush, a biology major from Fishers, Indiana; Carson Williams, a mechanical engineering major from Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Connor Frappier, an electrical engineering major from Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Overwatch Gold lost their first Titans match to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 3-1.
The Titans division also includes teams from the University of West Georgia, Akron University, Ball State, University of Delaware, University of Virginia and Louisiana Tech.
3rd team at next level
A third Overwatch team from Trine, Overwatch Navy, was placed in Division A for the spring. That team was formed from players who competed in the ECAC’s C and D divisions last fall.
Overwatch Navy is made up of Kylee Garrity, a civil engineering major from New Palestine, Indiana; Addie Winebrenner, a mechanical engineering major from Huntington, Indiana; Sean Smith, a business administration major from Pleasant Lake, Indiana; Aiden Keever, an extended reality major from Highlands Ranch, Colorado; and Xander Bowman, a computer science and information technology major from Howe, Indiana.
Overwatch Navy won their first Division A match 3-0 against the City College of New York.
