Turn ideas into infrastructure
The Bachelor of Science in civil engineering at Trine University offers big opportunities in a small setting. You can turn your ideas into infrastructure that supports the safety, functionality and sustainability of modern life. Trine's program covers all five of the major civil engineering disciplines: structural, geotechnical, transportation, environmental and water resources engineering.
Why Trine?
The Bachelor of Science in civil engineering is Trine's oldest engineering discipline, dating to 1902. Over the decades, the program has developed strong industry connections, built exceptional resources and secured advanced equipment and laboratory space. You will also have the chance to apply your skills further in Trine's chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), a regional championship team.
As a civil engineering student at Trine, you will have access to labs that house:
- Five-axis waterjet cutter capable of cutting 12-inch-thick steel plates
- Universal testing machine rated to 400,000 lbs in compression and 200,000 lbs in tension, upgraded with precise load control and an extensometer for failure testing
- Integrated traffic counting system using radar and road tubes
- Environmental scanning electron microscope
During your time as a civil engineering student at Trine, you will experience:
- Conferences and field trips such as senior trips to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Louisville, Kentucky
- Industry events such as the ISEA (Indiana Structural Engineers Association) Spring Conference, APAI (Asphalt Pavement Association of Indiana) Winter Conference and Indiana Section ASCE Conference
- Innovative teaching tools such as 3D-printed structural models
As a civil engineering student at Trine, you will have the chance to join:
- American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)
- Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE)
- Engineers Without Borders (EWB)
- Undergraduate research projects
- Regional and national design competitions
Trine's curriculum for the Bachelor of Science in civil engineering prioritizing in-person, firsthand experiences. You will take a total of six lab-based courses as a civil engineering student.
- Geomatics Laboratory: Gain practical skills utilizing geomatics techniques and technologies. Work with surveying equipment, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and remote sensing data. Apply lecture knowledge to real-world projects and develop valuable hands-on experience.
- Structural Analysis Laboratory: Receive an introduction to computer methods for structural analysis, including both commercial software packages and common applications. Conduct experiments to measure the vertical deflection of beams and compare results to deflections predicted by classical methods.
- Soil Mechanics Laboratory: Perform laboratory tests that are common in a geotechnical engineering lab. Test classification, permeability, compaction, consolidation and shear strength. Practice in-situ sampling, dynamic cone penetrometer testing and visually classifying soils.
As a civil engineering student at Trine, you will have early engagement with the program and civil engineering faculty. You will take civil engineering courses as early as your first year.
With small, interactive classes, typically with 10-30 students, you will build strong mentorship relationships with faculty. Plus, early exposure to the program provides you with an advanced understanding of the real-world relevance of coursework from the start.
Trine's curriculum also allows civil engineering students the opportunity to pursue a minor in environmental engineering.
Preparation for professional exams, successful career
Trine's Bachelor of Science in civil engineering equips you with a broad civil engineering foundation, ideal for planning, building and maintaining infrastructure that communities rely on every day. Upon graduation, you will be prepared for the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, Principles of Engineering exam, to become a licensed Professional Engineer and secure a well-paying job in the discipline of your choice.
With an increasing demand to repair aging systems and support future development, you can fill the critical need for well-educated civil engineering graduates.
