Crenshaw 'Realizing the Dream' Recipient

October 03, 2013

ANGOLA, Ind. – A Trine University sophomore from St. Paul, Ind., is the "Realizing the Dream" scholarship recipient for 2013.

Cameron A. Crenshaw, the award recipient, is majoring in mechanical engineering and is on the five-year master's degree track. He is the son of Todd and Tammy Crenshaw of St. Paul.

Realizing the Dream is a program coordinated by the Independent Colleges of Indiana that acknowledges first-generation college sophomores at Indiana private colleges for outstanding achievement in academics and campus involvement during their freshman year.  The program has been funded by the Lilly Endowment, Inc., since 1989.

Each selected student from a participating Indiana private college receives a $2,000 scholarship from Lilly Endowment, and they are asked to name a secondary teacher who most influenced their decision to attend college.  The nominated teacher receives a $1,000 Professional Development Grant.  Crenshaw named Al Parsons, a technology teacher at Shelbyville High School, as the instructor who most encouraged and mentored him into pursuing an engineering degree.

Crenshaw, who is also a Mechanical Engineering Chair Scholarship recipient at Trine, was selected for the award by Trine's Academic Council from a field of more than 100 first-generation students from the 2012 freshmen class.  He achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average during his first year at Trine and plans to complete a work co-op this spring with Rolls-Royce, Corp., in Indianapolis. He participates in Trine's Honors Program, intramural athletics and in Campus Christian House.  He was salutatorian at Shelbyville High School in a graduating class of 263 students and earned a 4.6 GPA and 1340 SAT score.

Crenshaw and fellow award recipients will be honored Saturday, Nov. 9, during a banquet at the Sheraton Indianapolis at Keystone Cross.
