Hear My Voice Awards 2024

Trine’s Amy Salyer-Nicholls Writing Center concluded their Hear My Voice Writing Competition on April 11th, 2024, with their 16th annual writing awards ceremony.

The competition featured a variety of writers and their accomplishments, ranging from academic essay writing, creative nonfiction, fiction and poetry. Within each category, awards were given for first, second and third place, as well as honorable mentions and student choice awards.

For academic essay writing, awards were presented by Professor Brendan Allen. First place went to Lydia Roop for her piece titled, “To Fear Life Itself”. Roop’s essay explores concepts of mental health as shown in Don DeLillo’s novel, White Noise. Roop’s essay also received the student choice vote for academic essays.

Second place in academic writing was given to Alex Fosnaugh for his essay, “The Five Elements of Magical Realism and its Connection to Identity Exploration”, with third place in academic writing going to Kenzie Rosenau for her essay, “Merry Wives of Windsor: Fairy Lore and Historical Significance”. The honorable mention award was received by Madison Kickbush, for her essay on “The Effects of Visuals Within Classrooms”.

Furthermore, the awards ceremony honored first, second, and third place poetry writers, as well as honorable mentions and student choice awards in this category. Awards in poetry were presented by Dr. Henry Yukevich. First place for poetry writing went to Muriel Mackie, for her poem titled, “Suzzanne, the Hero of the Glue Lagoon”.

Second place in poetry writing was given to Faith Fegley for her piece, “Red Panda Lego Set Disguised as an I Love You”. Third place in poetry was earned by Brock Barger for his poem “Listen to them”, with the honorable mention award going to Areeba Kazi for her work, “Old Bones”, and the student choice award going to Cadence Bommarito for her poem, “To Be Alone”.

The Hear My Voice awards ceremony also honored creative nonfiction writers, presented by Dr. Timothy Hopp. Within the category, first place was granted to Rhiley Parkoff for her piece, “The Timeless Train”.

Second place was earned by the essay titled "My Life as a Borderline". Third place was given to Samantha Marvin for her piece, “Walking Man”, with honorable mentions going to Lydia Roop once more for her piece, “The Pond”, and the student choice award being given to a piece titled "Why I Write".

Finally, the awards ceremony honored fiction writers, with awards presented by Dr. Brandy DePriest. First place in fiction writing went to Muriel Mackie for her piece titled “Copies?”.

Second place in fiction writing was granted to Ireland Hosey, for her piece, “Dolls”. Third place went to Noah Scherer for his piece, an excerpt from the work Winter’s War, with both the honorable mention and student choice awards going to Marshall Rohrbach for his piece, “The Lone Wanderer”.

The ASN Writing Center’s Hear My Voice awards ceremony also featured opening and closing remarks from Dr. Janelle Pulczinski and Dr. Jeanette Goddard, respectively.

The ASN Writing Center looks forward to hosting Trine’s talented writers through the Hear My Voice Competition for years to come.
